The Effect of Knowledge about a Group on Perceived Group Variability and Certainty about Stereotype-Based Inferences
Second-hand knowledge about a group (e.g. from other people, the media) - but not a lack of first-hand knowledge - is associated with thinking groups are overly homogeneous, and applying stereotypes overconfidently to group members.
